Fountains remain at or just below 600 feet high. Due to drop in tephra fall USGS has lowered the alert level from RED/WARNING to ORANGE/WATCH. Summit deflation continues and is now over 32 microradians. View All Messages.

Fountain heights for both north and south vents are at or just under 600 feet. Only sparse small pumices (less than 1 inch) are falling in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Nat Park and surrounding communities. Fine ash and Peleʻs hair continue to fall. View All Messages.

The south fountain is about 700 feet (220 meters) high with the north around 600 feet (180 meters) high. Tephra fall is greatly reduced but still falling in communities near the park with finer ash reported as far away as Hilo. View All Messages.

South fountain has decreased to around 1000 feet (300 meters) high and north fountain is 700 feet (200 meters) high. Tephra fall to the north and east has greatly reduced in the past hour. Fine ash and hair falling as far as Hilo and HPP. View All Messages.

Kīlauea is erupting episodically in the summit caldera

This intermittent eruption has been occurring within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park since December 23, 2024. While lava flows are contained to the caldera, fallout from the lava fountains can affect communities downwind.

Where has tephra fallout been reported?

Tephra is any material erupted from a volcano that travels through the air. Volcanic ash, Pele's hair, and other tephra have fallen on communities downwind during lava fountaining episodes at the summit of Kīlauea.
